Global Perspective
A Jacksonville Duo Maps Out It’s Musical
Travels With A New Web Release

When Britt ‘Batsauce‘ Traynham and his wife, Lady Daisey (Daisey Traynham), set off for Europe in late Spring 2008, it wasn’t hard to imagine that their sound would resonate in the Old World. But their reception has exceeded their optimistic projections and helped carry the flavor of Northeast Florida around the globe. Batsauce’s newest release, ‘Gypsy Diaries’, offers an explicit illustration of the duo’s travels — and what’s more, it’s free.

There are a number of reasons why releasing a free album via the Internet works. Not bothering with a physical product saves time and resources. It also allows more people to access the music faster, and will hopefully spur the listener to grab any of the artist’s other discs that are for sale. ‘Gypsy Diaries’ can be had via the web at spooney.net/gypsy_diaries.

The recordings are grouped in three categories: Asia, Africa and South America. (Clicking on the continents begins the downloading of the ZIP files.) Song titles, while cutsey, are evocative of times and places: ‘Boss of Nova’, ‘More Rum’, ‘Bollywood Blues’, ‘Serengeti Disco’ and ‘Spice Trade’ are a few of the available tunes.

‘Gypsy Diaries’ is mostly instumental, except for vocal flourishes by Daisey — all the better for hearing Batsauce in fullest flight. Over a career spanning two decades, he may be best-known for his work producing two of the most distinctive voices this city has ever generated: his wife, and the great Patrick Evan. The eight tracks of ‘Asia’, themselves, amount to a 10-minute masterpiece.

The Traynhams have logged thousands of miles. The Asia segment was inspired by a stint teaching in China and South Korea. Beginning in Berlin, Batsauce and Daisey have also toured Europe in collaboration with Therapy (of the AB’s) as The Smile Rays. Their itinerary brought them through Copenhagen, Denmark; Dortmund and Weinheim, Germany; Jona and Rapperswil, Switzerland; Hradek Krakove, Czech Republic; Zwolle, Netherlands and Amsterdam.

As the couple moves, the music travels, too. Currently in release are the Smile Rays’ ‘Smilin On You’ (6Hole Records), the Japanese-only all-original CD ‘Party Place’ (Subcontact), a 12-inch record called ‘Funk Is Back’ (Jakarta/Groove Attack), and their song ‘Chicken’ is one of 29 tracks available on the ‘Digital Underground II’ mixtape, also available for free download. And of course, they’re all over YouTube.

The Smile Rays also appear on ‘Musicans For Minneapolis’, a three-CD, 57 song benefit album for the Minnesota Helps: I-35 Bridge Disaster Fund. The foundation, created after the August 2007 collapse that killed seven and injured 145, has raised more than $1.2 million to date. The album was released not by a record label, but by Electrovoice, and audio equipment maker founded in Indiana in 1927 and a subsidiary of Bosh Communications Systems. (I only wish I had the space to quote their propaganda at length. It’s truly beautiful stuff.)

The Smile Rays’ contribution, ‘Fresh Tradition’, features guest vocals by P-Funk master and commander George Clinton, whose connections to Duval go back some years. Batsauce also contributes some recording and engineering work to a track by Clinton and Lee Perry. The album also includes music by Calexico, Les Claypool, Alee Empire, Dick Dale, Joey DeFrancesco, Deke Dickerson, DJ Spooky, Faust, Fishbone, Helmet, Jason and the Scorchers, Steve Vai and a host of others. It’s all very strange but very good. The same can be said about Batsauce’s prodigious output throughout 2009.
